![]() The crew's jubilation is cut short as they soon receive reports of distress rockets at the rear of the convoy. After sonar contact is re-established, the submarine tries to slip under Greyhound, but Krause maneuvers his ship above the U-boat and fires a full pattern of depth charges, resulting in his first kill. Greyhound moves away from the convoy to intercept it based on its bearing and gets the U-boat within firing range, but the heavy seas allow the U-boat to dive before Greyhound can get a visual. Greyhound's radar operator identifies a surfaced sub heading towards the convoy. While they are still three days away from the resumption of air cover, high-frequency direction finding from the convoy flagship results in the interception of several German transmissions, indicating the presence of U-boats. The convoy enters the "Black Pit" - the Mid-Atlantic gap where they will be out of range of protective air cover. Krause is serving as overall commander of the escort ships, but despite his seniority and extensive naval education, it is his first wartime command. The convoy's escort consists of the Fletcher-class destroyer USS Keeling, radio call sign "Greyhound", captained by Commander Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) of the United States Navy the British Tribal-class destroyer HMS James, call sign "Harry" the Polish Grom-class destroyer ORP Viktor (with a Royal Navy liaison officer on the radio), call sign "Eagle" and the Canadian Flower-class corvette, HMCS Dodge, call sign "Dicky". With war movies finding that kind of success, Hanks throwing himself into the mix should be box office catnip for dads who want to go to the movies this summer. ![]() After Dunkirk’s immense box office success in 2017, there was last year’s Midway, a fine-enough movie that almost no one under the age of 50 saw, but still managed to make almost $60 million at the domestic box office. Speaking of Dunkirk, Greyhound seems to be the latest in a string of movies about naval operations in the second World War. It’s also worth noting that this is Hanks’ first return to World War II since 1998’s Saving Private Ryan - unless you count his narration in the mini-series The Pacific, which we do not. In fact, it sort of looks like he was jealous of Kenneth Branagh’s scene-chewing Commander in Dunkirk, and decided to give himself a whole movie to play that part, which honestly sounds great. The last time was 2011’s Larry Crowne, a misbegotten romcom which Hanks also directed, but it looks like he’s giving himself a little bit more to do here. This isn’t the first time Hanks has written a movie he’s starred in, but it’s been a while. From there, all naval-hell breaks loose, waves crash into boats, torpedoes are fired, and Tom Hanks makes that worried-but-brave face that he’s so good at. While the boat is on patrol, it’s ambushed by a pack of Nazi U-boats. destroyer in the early days of World War II. Greyhound - which is, like all great dad-movies, inspired by a actual events - follows captain Ernest Krause, played by Tom Hanks, on his first day in command of a U.S. ![]() In other words, it might be the most dadcore movie ever made. It’s also written by and stars Tom Hanks. The movie’s called Greyhound and it’s about boats, submarines, and the second World War. The trailer for Tom Hanks’ latest movie is here, and it looks like what you get if you mixed Captain Phillips with Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.
